Wind, hail, ice and the occasional haboob mean West Texans know what the house sounds like when it goes quiet. When the power, gas or internet goes out, here's how to see what's happening and report it.

First things first: If you see a downed power line, stay far away, assume it's live and call 911. If you smell gas, leave the building, then call 911 and Atmos Energy at 866-322-8667.

Lubbock Power & Light (LP&L): inside the city

Good to know: Even though Lubbock residents now buy electricity from a retail provider of their choice, LP&L still handles outages. Call LP&L, not the company on your bill.

South Plains Electric Cooperative (SPEC): rural areas and the edges of town

Lyntegar Electric Cooperative: rural areas south and southwest of Lubbock

Based in Tahoka, Lyntegar serves members in all or part of 11 counties, with offices in Tahoka, Lamesa, Seagraves and Sundown.

Xcel Energy: some surrounding areas

Natural gas: Atmos Energy

Gas outages are rare, but a hard freeze or a damaged line can interrupt service.

If your gas service is shut off, don't try to relight appliances yourself unless Atmos tells you it's safe.

Outage tips

  • Report it, even if the neighbors already did. More reports help crews pinpoint the problem.

  • Streetlight out? Call 311.

  • Unplug sensitive electronics so a power surge doesn't damage them when service comes back.

  • Running a generator? Keep it outside, away from windows and doors. Never run one in a garage.

  • Keep your fridge and freezer closed. Food stays cold longer that way.

  • Keep a charged power bank and a battery powered or hand crank radio around for storm season.
