South Plains veterans looking to buy rural land may have a financing option through the Texas Veterans Land Board.

The state program offers qualifying veterans and military members loans for eligible noncommercial land. The Texas General Land Office announced in February 2026 that the maximum standard land loan rose to $200,000, while the maximum for two spouses who both qualify rose to $275,000.

Veterans considering acreage around Lubbock should check eligibility, down-payment requirements and property restrictions directly with the Veterans Land Board before making an offer. They should also research water access, septic requirements, utility connections, easements and land-use restrictions.

The program is not limited to land sold by any particular broker. Eligibility and financing depend on the applicant and the property. Learn more from the Texas General Land Office's land loan information and February 2026 loan-limit announcement.
