A Flood Watch covers Lubbock County and much of the South Plains from 4 p.m. Thursday until 8 p.m. Friday, as forecasters warn of periods of heavy rain and possible flash flooding.

The National Weather Service expects widespread showers to begin Thursday afternoon and continue through much of Friday. Its Lubbock office says 1 to 3 inches of rain, with higher amounts locally, are possible across the region. A watch means flooding is possible, not that flooding has already occurred.

  • Thursday, October 29: Morning fog, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1 p.m. High near 72°F; 40% chance of rain.

  • Thursday night: Showers and possible thunderstorms; low near 57°F; 100% chance of rain.

  • Friday, October 30: Showers, especially before late afternoon. High near 63°F; 100% chance of rain.

  • Halloween Saturday: Mostly cloudy, high near 71°F.

Low-lying areas, creeks and poorly draining areas could flood if the heaviest rain develops. Drivers should not enter flooded roadways. Friday is also the last day of early voting, and some outdoor events could be affected. No event cancellations have been confirmed.
