Lubbock County's election results were delayed until early Wednesday because numbers did not match at one early voting location, prompting officials to rescan all 5,681 paper ballots cast there, the Lubbock County Elections Office said.
In a press release Wednesday afternoon, the office said an optical scanner failed earlier and had to be replaced because the v-drives where votes are stored were unreadable.
"Since there was no way to determine how the error occurred, the safest and most secure way to ensure that all the ballots cast at that location were correctly counted was to have Central Count re-scan each paper ballot cast at that location," the release said.
The office said the process is provided for under Texas Election Code Section 127.156 and that it released unofficial results once it was completed.
"It is important to note that it is the duty of the Lubbock County Elections Office to ensure that every vote cast is counted accurately," the release said.
The location
The release did not name the site. The county's elections administrator told the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal it was the early voting location at 82nd Street and Boston Avenue, where the number of check-ins did not match the number of ballots cast, and that the public could watch the review on web cameras through the county website. What comes next
The county said Wednesday morning that its unofficial results did not include about 350 absentee ballots still to be processed or that could arrive by the 5 p.m. Wednesday deadline. All totals remain unofficial until canvassed.
