Lubbock Chronicle — Morning Edition

Tuesday, October 6, 2026

Good morning, Lubbock. Today brings a new tool to protect local property records, a new Buddy Holly Center exhibition, a major concert tonight and a bye week for unbeaten Texas Tech football.

LubbockChronicle.com is updated again each afternoon with new and materially updated local developments.

Top 5 Today in Lubbock

1. Lubbock County launches free property-fraud alerts

Lubbock County property owners now have access to a free alert system designed to notify them when documents are recorded using their name or property information. The service is intended as an early-warning tool against deed and property fraud; an alert does not itself mean fraud has occurred, but it can help owners spot suspicious filings quickly.

2. No. 9 Texas Tech gets its Homecoming kickoff time

Texas Tech is 5-0 and enters its open week ranked No. 9 in the US LBM Coaches Poll, the best of its current major-poll rankings. The Red Raiders return home Oct. 17 against Arizona State; kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. Central on FOX. Tech also carries an 11-game home winning streak into the matchup.

5. Could the Lubbock A-J Be Next?

The Amarillo Tribune reports staff layoffs at the Amarillo Globe-News, another West Texas newspaper owned by Gannett. The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal is also part of Gannett’s USA TODAY Network, raising a natural question about whether similar cuts could eventually reach Lubbock. There is no confirmed report of new layoffs at the A-J, and the paper recently moved its newsroom to a new downtown location while Gannett has also advertised for a government and public policy reporter in Lubbock.
