With Halloween approaching Saturday, Texas public safety officials are reminding families and drivers to watch for children on neighborhood streets. The Texas Department of Public Safety issued its annual guidance Monday, emphasizing visibility, safe walking and sober driving.

Reflective tape, flashlights and glow sticks can help drivers see trick-or-treaters after dark. DPS recommends using sidewalks and crosswalks, traveling with adult supervision, keeping to familiar neighborhoods and inspecting candy before eating it.

For drivers

  • Slow down in neighborhoods and near community Halloween events.

  • Put phones away and watch for children crossing unexpectedly.

  • Never drive impaired; arrange a sober ride.

  • Use extra care at dusk and after dark when costumes may be difficult to see.
